April 2009 Recommendations

Tana French's two novels: Into the Wood, and The Likeness and wonderful psychological novels of people and how they function under stress.  Into the Wood is in itself a case study of PTSD.  Both good reads as well as very psychological!

The Intention, Lynn McTaggart--fascinating look at impact of thinking on life!

1. Jeremy Narby The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge N.Y. Putnam, 1998 -a modern anthropologist's attempt to understand the science behind shamanism.

2. Clark Moustakas Heuristic Research, Newbury Park, CA Sage Pub, 1990--lovely look at understanding our own most important questions.

3. Jean-Dominique Bauby The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, N.Y. Vintage 1997-an amazing story written by a man trapped in his mind by a stroke, referred to as the locked in syndrome, can only communicate one letter at a time. He wrote this book in that manner--amazing story.

4. Amy Lansky PhD The Impossible Cure,RLRanch Press, 2003 -One of the most understandable and engaging books on homeopathy ever published. Dr Lansky was a researcher for NASA who tells the story of here autistic son's cure via homeopathy, and then goes on to present a wonderfully thorough and rich explanation of homeopathy.
5. Grace and Grit, Ken  and Treya Wilber, Shambala, Boston, 1993. This is a moving account of the journey this newly married couple embarks on using complementary and western medicine when after two weeks of marriage, Treya discovers she has breast cancer.  It is an overview of the perrenial philosophy, transpersonal psychology and complementary medicine.  Each write alternating chapters accounding their experience up until Treya's death.

6. Molecules of Emotion, Candace Pert,Ph.D. Scribner,N.Y. 1997.  This is a wonderful combination of the science of neurotransmitters and a woman scientist's life written by one of the biochemists who identified the opiate receptor site in the brain. 7.  The Life We Are Given, George Leonard & Michael Murphy, Penguin/Putnam,N.Y. 1995. Presentation of a simple daily path of yoga-like exercises, affirmations, physical activity and meditation.  Developed by two human potential experts, Murphy one of the founders of Esalen.  Easy to read, practical and enjoyable.
8.   A Brief History of Everything, Ken Wilber, Shambala,Boston,2000. For those of you who know this author, this book despite its imposing title is very readable.  Wilber explores the modern and post modern mindset with ease. He describes knowledge and verification of knowledge as two sided, the right and left path-objective and subjective.
9.   NOW,Discover Your Strengths,Marcus Buckingham & Donald Clifton, Free Press, N.Y.,2001. Wonderful book based on a study of over 2 million people looking at how to define and identify strengths.  Uses a thirty-four theme strength finder. A must for managers who want to build on strength! 
 10. Cultural Creatives: How 50 million people are changing the world, Paul Ray,PhD and Sherry Ruth Anderson,PhD., Harmony Books, N.Y. 2000.  A sociological and psychological research project of over 100,000 people identifying the themes and trends of the move to simply life, reduce commercialism and treat the planet and each other with respect.

Simple effective techniques for pvercoming traumatic stress symptoms.

Wonderful book on shamanism.
17 Rational Mysticism John Horgan  Houghton Mifflin N.Y. 2003
Science write John Horgan does a wonderful survey of approaches to mysticism.
18 The Field Lynn McTaggart, Harper Collins 2002
EXCELLENT!  Science writer Lynn McTaggart does a readable and exciting look at various science breakthroughts of the past 40 years which have an amazing impact on our understanding of complementary/alternative medicine.
19 Boomeritis, Ken Wilber , Shambala,Boston, 2002
Ken Wilber the profound modern psychologist/phylosopher has written a novel!  The main character is a 21 year old encourntering Wilber's philosophy for the first time.  Makes his "deep stuff" very readable!
20 Tapping the Dream Tree, Charles de Lint, TOR, N.Y. 2002 Wonderful short stories of the magical world behind our everyday lives.
